About the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo
The Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Cacatua galerita galerita, is found widely in Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Palau Islands, Biak Island and Australia. These noisy, conspicuous birds are usually found in pairs during the breeding season, and at other times in flocks of hundreds. They are wary and difficult to approach. Once in captivity, however, they make gentle and talkative pets, but they can be very destructive. They feed on seeds, berries, nuts, flowers, leaf buds, roots and insects, and are notorious for digging up newly sewn seed and raiding ripening crops. City dwellers love 'em ... farmers loathe 'em.
