About the Pelican
The Australian Pelican, Pelecanus conspicillatus, is one of our largest flying birds. It can weigh up to 8 kg.
Pelicans live on fish, and use their large pouch, which can hold up to 14 litres of water, as a 'Dipper' for catching their prey.
These birds are of very ancient lineage. Fossil remains have been found that are 30 to 40 million years old.
Although powerful flyers and good swimmers, Pelicans are clumsy and slow on land.
Visitors to Australia's far-northern city of Cairns (Queensland) are in an ideal situation to bird-watch as every morning considerable numbers of these beautiful creatures drift on the calm waters adjacent to the Esplanade. It certainly is a camera buffs delight.
