Situated near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia, the MacDonnell Ranges are formed from hard rock which is known to geologists as Heavitree Quartzite. About 850 million years ago, the ranges' flat faces were layers of sand on the beach of a shallow sea. Aerial views are spectacular and are rivalled only by trekking by foot into some of the rugged terrain.
Famous places in the area include Ormiston Gorge, Simpson's Gap, Standley Chasm and John Flynn's grave...all easily accessible from Alice Springs.
The spectacular gum tree in the foreground is Eucalyptus rabuana.
