The genus Iris has some 300 species, all native to temperate parts of the Northern Hemisphere. The Iris depicted in this design belongs to Iris germanica, one of the most widely grown of the species.
The genus was named for the rainbow (Iris), because of the diversity of colours found in the blooms.
If growing the German Iris, they like full sun, well-drained soil and, for plenitude of flower, the roots need dividing every second or third season.
