The Azure Kingfisher is widely distributed throughout Australia, from the Kimberley area in the north-west, down to south-eastern Australia, and north to Papua New Guinea. It is uncommon in Tasmania

Hunting singly or in pairs along streams, it perches on a dead branch over the water awaiting its prey. The Kingfisher takes small fish and frogs, yabbies, water beetles and crabs.

It nests in a tunnel about 60cm long dug into the river bank where it lays five to six rounded, glossy white eggs. The same tunnel appears to be used by the same pair of birds in consecutive years.

The largest of the Kingfisher family is the Laughing Kookaburra
